    Bertice Berry
Author and motivational speaker Bertice Berry will return to keynote UCSB's New Student Convocation Sept. 17 at 2 p.m. on the Faculty Club green. Following the model established last fall when some 4,000 students joined 65 faculty and staff at the convocation, the official welcome will run an hour, and small group discussions at residence halls will begin at 3:45 p.m., said organizer Deborah Fleming, associate dean of students. Faculty and staff interested in participating should contact her at x4094.

    Swiss, UCSB to Exchange Researchers
An engineering and science student exchange between the campus and Zurich-based ETH (Eidgenoessische Technische Hochscule) will begin on July 1 and run until 2005, announced Chancellor Henry Yang and College of Engineering Dean Matt Tirrell. Research groups at UCSB and Switzerland's Federal Institute of Technology would exchange three to five post-doctoral, graduate, or undergraduate students annually. Details will be available from the offices of the deans of engineering and of science.

    Emergency Op Volunteers Needed
In case of an emergency, such as an earthquake, fire, or flood, volunteers will be needed for services such as search and rescue, first aid, driving, and food distribution. The Office of Business Services, in cooperation with the Emergency Operations Center, is working on a training program for such volunteers. If interested, call Assistant Director Julie Sears (x2585) in business services.

    HONORS & AWARDS

Steven Allaback, professor of English and UCSB's faculty athletic representative, has been elected to a two-year term as president of the Big West Conference, starting on July 1. He is currently president of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

Dietmar Bisch, associate professor of mathematics, has been invited to deliver an address to the International Congress of Mathematicians, which will meet in Beijing this August. The congress convenes once every four years, and invited addresses are great honors.

Geographer Frank Davis, Bren School professor, has been chosen to receive a fellowship from the Aldo Leopold Leadership Program operated by Oregon State University and funded by the Packard Foundation. The program is designed to produce "science communicators of the future."
