Bike to Work Festivities on May 22 Are Open to AllThe Campus's annual
Bike to Work Day celebration is set for May 22 at 5 p.m. on the Faculty
Club Lawn, and Susan Kinnell Carty plans to be there.
"I wouldn't miss it," said the UCSB Bookstore's book buyer and a
campus bicycle commuter for almost 10 years.
She peddles an eight-mile roundtrip every workday so long as weather
and the size of her book load permit. Carty is 64 years old, but did
not allow even a hip replacement three years ago to keep her off two
wheels for long. She figures she has already saved nearly $2,500 by
not buying parking permits.
Carty will join many others at the May 22 party for the free mini-tune
ups offered by the Associated Students Bike Shop, not to mention the
food, drink, and raffle prizes. All UCSB employees are welcome to attend
the hour-long festivities, said James Wagner, coordinator of the Transportation
Alternatives Program.
Though she retires in December, Carty has a vision for UCSB's transportation
future: She would like to see cars banned from campus and employees
shuttled back and forth aboard a Disneyland-style people-mover from
remote parking areas.
