The UCSB Police Department is seeking volunteers to help set up a countywide network to convey tips on criminal activity to police agencies. Known as CrimeStoppers, the Santa Barbara County group would serve under the nonprofit Santa Barbara Citizens Council on Crime, according to John MacPherson, UCSB chief of police.
CrimeStoppers initial task would be to establish an anonymous reporting system that would use the telephone and provide cash awards for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of crimes, he said. Other law enforcement agencies in the county are providing seed money and volunteers.
Campus police have been requested to nominate three to five people for CrimeStoppers this month, so anyone interested should contact Chief MacPherson (x3260) "soon," he said. There are some 600 such CrimeStoppers programs all across the world, and they are very effective, reported MacPherson.
