  • MCC Wins Re-vote

An emphatic 82 percent of the 5,400 undergraduate students who voted in the Oct. 8-10 special election approved a new assessment to help maintain and expand the services of the MultiCultural Center. They added $1.75 to the present 75 cents levied upon students every quarter (except summer) for a MCC lock-in fee of $2.50 for each of the fall, winter, and spring sessions.
"I am so grateful to the students for their support," said Zaveeni Khan-Marcus, MCC director. "I am also touched by the more than 100 professors who allowed us to make announcements in their classes."
This was the second time students voted in favor of the higher contribution. Khan-Marcus and her staff were told by the UC Office of the President that since the Associated Students' spring "Voters Guide" failed to mention the previous lock-in fee, they had to return to the voters and seek a new confirmation.
The Associated Students also sponsored a measure to increase its base fee by $10 to $19.10 a quarter per student. It won 58 percent of the vote but failed to secure the two-thirds approval necessary to pass.
