    Have You Registered Yet?
    Voter registration tables near the Arbor and in front of the UCen are part of a nonpartisan campaign sponsored by the Associated Students and the Student Affairs Division that will run through October 21. Registration forms for the November 5 election can be picked up at locations around the campus, including the Post Office and the Office of Student Life, or they are at <www.sa.ucsb.edu/voterreg>.




    HONORS & AWARDS


    James J. Bradac, professor of communication, was saluted this summer by the International Communication Association for a book he co-wrote with UCD's Charles R. Berger in 1982. They received the Fellows Book Award for "Language and Social Knowledge," which was called "a landmark in the subdiscipline of interpersonal communication."





    The University Consortium for Geographic Information Science has named geography professors Reginald G. Golledge (left) and Michael F. Goodchild UCGIS Researcher of the Year and UCGIS Educator of the Year, respectively. Golledge was lauded for linking the social sciences to geographic information science and Goodchild for efforts to establish high-quality curricula for GIS.



    Oscar H. Ibarra, professor of computer science, will visit the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology this fall on a fellowship from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. The fellowship provides room, board, travel, and research expenses for 60 days at the institute. He has also recently received an Award of Distinction from the Computing Society of the Philippines and the 2002 Founder's Lectureship Award in Engineering from the Philippine-American Academy of Science and Engineering.



    TAP/Bookstore Awards

    Each month the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) awards two $50 gift certificates donated by the UCSB Bookstore. In April the winners drawn were bicycle commuters Galen Miller, a cook for DLG Commons, and Sonja Downing, a music graduate student. In May the winners were bicycle commuters David Andeen, a materials graduate student researcher, and Kelly Ennis, a TA in mathematics. In June the winners were bus commuter Judy Kim, a lab assistant for EEMB, and bicycle commuter Dietmar Bisch, associate professor of mathematics.     TRANSITIONS


    Ann Ricchiazzi, a former webmaster for geography, has assumed similar duties as webmaster for the UCSB Home Page, placing her in the Public Affairs Office. She has been a campus employee since 1999.
