More than five month after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, a clearinghouse-type of Web site, which connects people to many resources, is being maintained by UCSB scholars in the Center for Teaching Social Justice www.education.ucsb.edu/socialjustice .
The site includes research and media sources; relief/fundraisers; professional support sources; age-appropriate outreach projects; and direct-action groups.
Based in the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education, the center was established before 9/11 but quickly focused on ways to help teachers make understandable to young students what had happened. "We're not advocating a particular point of view, but we want children to have access to appropriate information," said Judith Green, who helped create the site. She, Carol Dixon, and Hsiu-Zu Ho are professors of education; Sheridan Blau, another main contributor, is a senior lecturer in English.
