Top Poet to Keynote Convocation
Billy Collins, who
is completing his 2001-03 term as the 11th poet laureate of the United
States, will speak at UCSB's annual New Student Convocation the afternoon
of Sept. 15 and read his work that night in Campbell Hall.
Collins, who has taught English at the City University of New York
for more than 30 years, has more than a half-dozen books of poetry
to his credit, several of which have won major awards. Critics call
his work "accessible" and "witty" while being
profound.
He will deliver the keynote address to the convocation at 3 p.m. on
the Faculty Club lawn, joining Chancellor Henry T. Yang, Vice Chancellor
Michael Young, and College of Letters and Science Acting Provost Aaron
Ettenberg in welcoming students to campus. Associated Students President
Miguel Lopez will also address his peers.
After the hour-long ceremony, faculty and staff will lead discussions
with students and their families between 4:30-5:30 p.m. in various
locations on and off campus. Convocation organizer Debbie Fleming,
associate dean of students, anticipates between 40 and 50 of these
small-group discussions.
At 8 p.m., Collins will comment on and read his poems. Tickets to
his performance will run $10 for students and $20 for the general
public.
