Turkey Trotters Called
The Recreational Sports Program stages its annual Turkey Trot run/walk to benefit the Jack Canfield Chicken Soup Fund, UCSB's medical emergency reserve, on Saturday, Nov. 22, beginning with registration at 8 a.m. Starting at the Campus Lagoon behind the UCen, walkers and runners will get their information packets for 5k or 10k courses. HONORS & AWARDS


Bryan Kim, assistant professor of education, has received the Asian American Psychological Association's 2003 Early Career Award for "distinguished contributions."


Nelson Lichtenstein, professor of history, has been awarded Cornell University's Taft Labor History Prize for his book, "State of the Union: A Century of American Labor" (Princeton University Press, 2003).



TAP/Bookstore Awards
Each month the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) awards two $50 gift certificates from the UCSB Bookstore to TAP participants. In April, the winners were carpool commuter Aysu Betin and bus commuter Zoe Kinias, both researchers; in May, they were bus and bike commuters Paul Lee, a Physical Activities Dept. assistant director, and Lisa Morrill, of Extension; in June, they were bus and bike commuters Cheryl Cohen, a teaching assistant, and Thomas Jaramillo, a researcher. July saw bike rider Brian Naughton of materials and car pooler Scott Chambers of Facilities Management win; in August, the winners were bike rider Fiona Goodchild of CNSI and car pooler Donna Carpenter, director of accounting.



TRANSITIONS


Research biologist Allison Whitmer is the Marine Science Institute's new director of education and outreach. She came to UCSB from Arizona State University where she was an undergraduate program manager.



IN MEMORIAM


Julie Velarde, former Anthropology Department undergraduate and graduate programs advisor, died on Sept. 30 at her Goleta home. The California native and UCSB graduate was 59. She played on, and her husband of 33 years coached, the first Hot Wheels basketball team organized for wheelchair athletes in Santa Barbara. She is survived by her husband, Manuel, a son, a stepdaughter, two grandchildren, her mother, Delores Rehn, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Contributions in lieu of flowers are encouraged to a hospice or charity of the donor's choice.
