Engineering, Math and Science
  • Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration (CCBER)
    The Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration (CCBER) houses over 100,000 plant and animal specimens in the Herbarium, Vertebrate, Invertebrate Collections and Special Collections. We provide opportunities for K-12 academic preparation through our highly regarded Kids in Nature program and special community education programs including a Monday night Restoration Ecology seminar during the academic year. Public service and professional advising help the Center to fulfill its overall mission of increasing understanding of and preserving biodiversity, and training and educating future scientists to carry out these important activities. We offer tours of the animal, plant and special collections and the restored natural areas we manage on the UCSB campus. Please phone 893-2401 for tour information.

  • Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement Center (MESA)
    The Santa Barbara Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement Center (MESA) School Program addresses the historically low numbers of disadvantaged and low income students pursuing math based majors in college. MESA provides academic/career awareness and preparation services for secondary students with high interests in math and science. The goal is for every participant to complete four years of college preparatory math and English along with chemistry and physics, and to take the PSAT and SAT I&II before high school graduation. Functions involving students, their families, teachers and staff include: school site meetings and activities, field trips to college campuses, MESA day competitions, Academies, scholarships, and summer programs. Currently, more than 400 senior high school students and nearly 500 junior high school students are enrolled in the Santa Barbara and Ventura County Schools.

  • MESA Engineering Program (MEP)
    MESA Engineering Program (MEP) is a comprehensive program for the recruitment, retention, academic support, and career preparation of educationally disadvantaged students in the College of Engineering. Some of the components of the program include a Student Study Center, Academic Excellence Workshops, orientation courses, career advising, and providing links with student and professional organizations.

  • MESA School Program (MSP)
    MESA School Program (MSP), is a pre-college outreach program serving over 900 students (K-12) in Santa Barbara & Ventura Counties. MSP provides activities that encourage students to pursue a college prep academic plan that leads to math based careers. It includes MESA Day competitions, rocket building and launch, SAT Prep workshops, Lego robotic competitions, College tours and Leadership training. MSP is a collaborative program developing and implementing creative outreach initiatives with Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP) and Puente.

  • Arts Library
    TThe Arts Library houses scholarly collections of over 300,000 volumes on art, architecture, and music, and provides access to dozens of electronic information resources. The music collection contains over 87,000 books and music scores, as well as periodicals, videos, microforms, and over 35,000 sound recordings. The recordings (CDs, LPs, and tapes) are available for in-library listening; videos (VHS and DVD) may be viewed in one of two small-group viewing rooms. Also available for on-campus listening are five online audio databases that comprise thousands of albums of classical, jazz, and traditional music. The art collection contains over 210,000 books, periodicals, exhibition catalogs, artists' books, catalogues raisonné and non-book materials including videos, cd/roms, and extensive holdings of microforms. Available on-campus only is access to thousands of art images, articles, reference works and other scholarly electronic databases.   • Early Academic Outreach Program
    Early Academic Outreach provides pre-college preparation and assistance to middle and high school students and parents in selected schools in Santa Barbara, Ventura and Kern Counties. Services include college planning and financial aid workshops, transcript evaluation, SAT preparation, college course requirements (A-G) and four systems of Higher Ed workshops, UC Application and personal statement workshops, life and career planning, academic recognition events, college visits, summer Algebra Academies, academic skills development and college readiness seminars.

  • Off Campus Degree Programs
    Off Campus Studies (OCS) offers undergraduate degree programs at the UCSB Center in Ventura. Students may complete upper-division credit toward a Bachelor of Arts degree in a variety of disciplines, including Anthropology, English, History, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology and Interdisciplinary Studies. OCS features afternoon and evening classes that are convenient for working adults.

  • Open Enrollment (formerly Concurrent Enrollment)
    The Open Enrollment Program is a cooperative arrangement between the campus and UCSB Extension that enables qualified individuals to enroll in undergraduate and graduate courses on a space available basis without being formally admitted to UCSB. (May also be referred to as Open University or Concurrent Enrollment.) This program is ideal for those who are considering returning to school, preparing to enter UCSB, seeking to complete a few units to graduate, or desiring to take specific UCSB courses for professional reasons. During the summer, community members may register for courses through Summer Sessions.

Special Programs
  • Accelerated Study Access Program (ASAP)
    ASAP in the College of Letters and Science allows highly qualified students from the Santa Barbara area to enroll simultaneously in their junior or senior high schools and at UCSB. ASAP participants are admitted to the University of California with freshman standing, and have access to a range of on-campus academic resources. They may enroll in any UCSB course for which they are qualified, and receive full university credit for each course satisfactorily completed.

  • Project Excel
    Sponsored by the Center for Black Studies Research, Project Excel is a community-based initiative that seeks to improve the academic preparation of local African-American, American Indian, and other underrepresented students in grades 5-12, in order to facilitate their eligibility to enroll at UCSB and other colleges and universities. Project Excel assists students and their families by offering resources such as: mentors and tutors who help keep individual students on track academically and who model what it takes to become a college-going student; parent education seminars; workshops on college applications and financial aid; and access to summer programs including the Stanford Great Books program, the College Readiness Academy, the Patricia Henley Summer Theatre program, Research Mentorship Program, Tech Trek, and others.

Summer Session
  • Early Start Program
    Academically talented high school juniors from the Santa Barbara area are invited to enroll in two lower-division undergraduate courses for credit during the summer session. University bound students get a head start on their college careers and a taste of college life in this pre-college experience. Some financial help may be available to qualified students in the tri-county area through FOG (Faculty Outreach Grant). Students in the Los Angeles area may receive financial support through the Los Angeles Basin Initiative (LABI).

  • Research Mentorship Program
    This innovative summer program allows pre-college students in grades 10-12 to participate in ongoing laboratory and field-based, cutting edge research in the social, physical, and biological sciences. In this extraordinary six-week residential program, qualified students take two courses for university credit and conduct research under the tutelage of top researchers in departments as diverse as the arts and music, the humanitites, social sciences, sciences, and engineering. The student researchers learn to write a scientific paper and present their research at a public symposium at the end of the term.

  • Community Affairs Board (CAB) Volunteer Action Center
    By organizing the volunteer efforts of more than 5,000 students annually, the Community Affairs Board aids the community in taking action on key social issues such as poverty, education, individuals with disabilities and the environment. CAB seeks to augment classroom experiences, to create opportunities for career exploration, to connect UCSB to the community in a meaningful way, and to promote the ethics of public service through a variety of community and campus service projects. CAB volunteers give their time to more than 400 local nonprofit agencies and 18 national, state, and local associations including local schools, recreation centers, rehabilitation clinics, museums, nursing homes and much more.

Visit the Campus
  • Campus Tours & Admissions Presentations
    The Visitor Center is open weekdays from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., excluding major holidays. Guided campus tours are offered Monday through Friday at 12 noon and 2 p.m. The 75-90 minute walking tours include the Davidson Library, a Residence Hall, and the University Center as well as other areas of interest to prospective students and their families. Visitors also have the option to attend a one-hour admission presentation for prospective transfer applicants at 1 p.m. Reservations are not required for campus tours or admission presentations for groups of 10 or fewer people. The Visitor Center is closed on weekends, except for Saturdays in April and October (see Saturday Tours & Admissions Presentations).

  • Parents' and Family Weekend
    Every Fall, UCSB welcomes students' families -- parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents -- to explore the campus and get a firsthand look at what life is like at UCSB. Guests have the opportunity to attend classes, participate in faculty presentations, information sessions, and campus area tours, as well as meet a variety of UCSB faculty, administrators, and Chancellor Henry and Mrs. Dilling Yang.

  • Saturday Tours & Admission Presentations
    During the months of April and October, the Visitor Center is open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. A one-hour admission presentation for prospective freshman applicants is offered at 11 a.m. and a 75-90 minute campus walking tour is offered at 12 noon. In April ONLY, an additional tour is offered for newly admitted students and their families at 11 a.m.

  • Spring Insight Open House
    UCSB's annual open house event is scheduled for Saturday, April 10th, 2010. Admissions, the three colleges, academic departments, financial aid, housing, support services, and student organizations are represented on-campus throughout the day. Spring Insight programs are designed to inform newly admitted students and their families as well as students who have not yet applied about the opportunities for academic and personal growth at UC Santa Barbara.
